Surrounded with examples of upstanding Indian Americans — in his own home, in his temple, at the weekly parties given by his parents' friends — Kiran nevertheless finds it impossible to get the knack of "normalcy." For Kiran Sharma, a long, strange trip is about to begin — a journey so sublime, so ridiculous, so painfully beautiful, that it can only lead to the truth...

Exciting New Book Reading Videos

Sunday, October 11, 2009

For all who were not able to attend, here is the impromptu performance of "Billie Jean" that I did at the Happy Ending Reading Series at the Brooklyn Book Festival on 9/13. Jonathan Ames, David Cross, and I all had to perform one public risk onstage, and mine was to recreate in dance one of Michael Jackson's most famous performances of all time. I told a story, read a bit, and then prepared to dance (at about the 6:00 mark). However, when the CD failed to work, the best audience ever and I did what we had to do. Yes, the song is too high for me; yes, I sure know how to garble some lyrics; and yes, I sing much better in my cabaret shows (god, I hope so); but something out of the ordinary sure happened that fateful afternoon in Brooklyn:

(Thank you to Adam Rathe and Nicole Brydson for taping and uploading.)

Also, for all you LITTLE MERMAID fans out there, here's footage of my best Ariel impersonation at the Slipper Room in May:

(Thank you to Markus Hoffman for taping and uploading.)

If you are entertained, please forward on to others!

RIP, MJ, and long live Ariel.

Buy BLUE BOY via the amazing IndieBound!

Monday, May 18, 2009

Shop Indie Bookstores

More and more these days, I love independent bookstores for their commitment to authors, to books, and to the overall community of reading. That is why IndieBound is such an incredible organization; it culls together the best and brightest of the independent bookselling community and champions a love of reading and supporting authors through and through. When you pick up a copy of BLUE BOY from your independent bookseller, you truly make the book a part of your hometown. And Kiran would LOVE that! Just as much as he would LOVE IndieBound.
